Are Biometrics In IT Security Really That Much Better?
Posted by SecExtra on March 14th, 2010

Biometric devices have really taken security to the next level with incredible pieces of technology. Everything from fingerprint readers to iris-recognition units to facial recognition systems have emerged today. The question a lot of people have is whether biometrics in IT security is the route to take.

Some feel biometric devices do not offer a higher level of protection over traditional security methods. On the contrary, others recognize the fact that a password or smart card can be taken by anyone. When it comes to biometrics, the system can recognize exactly who is using it.

The most widely used device with biometrics in IT security is fingerprint readers. This is an incredibly reliable means of identification and many recognize it. While it is a cheap and accurate option, these readers have been fooled more often than other biometric devices. It does present a problem for people without hands or those who have difficulty moving their arms as well.

Another option for biometrics in IT security is iris-recognition systems. These are highly reliable and even surpass the accuracy of DNA testing. Upon scanning for identification, the iris acts like a human barcode as a unique pattern is created by a tangled meshwork of connective tissue. What many do not realize is that there are not two irises alike in the human population; not even between identical twins.

What turns people off with iris-recognition systems is the high price. You can expect to pay easily a thousand dollars just for an entry-level device. However, it can be a terrific way to protect yourself and your identity which makes this one of the top biometrics in IT security.
