According to new research from Webroot, the first Internet security service company, only about 25 per cent of employees have tried to bypass company security policies while at work, while nearly all (95 per cent) respect the importance of their employer’s measures for protecting their network and customer information. “It is a pleasant surprise to learn that employees understand the need for increased security and abide by corporate policy,” said Jacques Erasmus, chief information security officer for Webroot. “That said, employees at all levels still introduce risk to a corporate network through activities like surfing the web, shopping online, planning personal events and accessing personal email accounts while at work. As we see more and more malware being spread through the browser, such as Zeus and SpyEye which infects users’ computers to track their keystrokes and steal their banking information, it is vitally important for companies to put in place suitable web security solutions and develop effective and secure web security policies to help protect their organisation.” Surveying more than 2,500 employees in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, Webroot also found that executive or senior management staff performed non-work related activities during work at a higher rate than [...]

With exactly three months until this year’s IP EXPO takes place at London’s Earls Court 2, event organiser Imago Techmedia is counting down with a game of spot the taxi. To play, simply spot the IP EXPO-branded London taxicab, take a picture and upload that picture to Twitter using the hashtag #ipexpo. More information on entering the contest is available here: www.facebook.com/ipexpo All participants during each month will be entered into a random draw to win free prizes such as miniature IP EXPO taxis and a free taxi ride. On the last day of IP EXPO, October 20th, the photographer whose picture has the most votes will receive the first prize of his or her choice – either the latest iPhone or the latest iPad. All other winners will be announced on Facebook and Twitter (@ipexpo) on the 19th day of every month until October. The IP EXPO taxi can be spotted all around London, but it will be based near Waterloo. The IP EXPO cab and its cabbie, Charlie, have already been snapped at landmarks such as Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
A significant and potentially damaging disconnect on aviation security policy and direction is beginning to emerge as the industry sector gears up for the forthcoming Transport Security Expo 2011. With the United States government maintaining a hardline stance and insisting that the European Union bend to its will on aviation security, United Kingdom policymakers seem determined to drive an industry led approach forward, that some notable observers suggest turns the clock back a full decade. This apparent disconnect began to emerge in a brisk exchange of transatlantic views late last year and partially spilled into the public domain when special forces succeeded in capturing and killing Osama bin Laden in early second quarter of this year. United States authorities are insistent on maintaining robust defenses and argue that any relaxation of security controls at European Union airports may adversely impact on their national security goals. This stance has already resulted in the European Union stepping back in enforcing regulation regarding liquid screening at airports and may yet put paid to the United Kingdom government drive to place commercial sector entities in charge of air security generally. Delegates will find themselves immersed in the decade old issue of how best to [...]

The Counter Terror Expo being held in Olympia in April 2011 comes at a time of dramatic changes in the political landscape in the Middle East. In this piece Dr Dave Sloggett debates the implications of these political changes for Al Qaeda and how that may change the nature of the threat from transnational terrorism in the west. The horrific scenes of September 11th 2001 will not readily dim for many of those that witnessed those events. It was a Berlin Wall moment, something that we can all vividly recall. The Counter Terror 2011 Conference in London in April provides a moment for many with hugely busy agendas to take stock of the current situation with respect to terrorism ten years on. That the form of trans-national terrorism witnessed in New York and Washington and subsequently in Bali, Madrid, London and Mumbai has not been defeated cannot be in doubt. Globally over the last year nearly 1000 terrorist related incidents a month have occurred with over 11,000 events recorded in 2010, up slightly on the previous year. International terrorism is an enduring problem. For all of the undoubted pressure applied to Al Qaeda and its franchises over the past ten [...]

Last week’s suicide attack in the busy international arrivals meet and greet area at Moscow Domodedovo Airport, serves as a chilling reminder that transportation hubs and other high profile locations where people gather, remain potent targets for those with the intent to kill and maim. This message has been voiced regularly at Counter Terror Expo, the world leading event held annually in London and attended by counter-terrorism professionals from across the globe. Domodedovo is the city’s busiest international airport and the primary gateway for many of the world’s major airlines. The choice of target, location of the blast and the timing, were all clearly chosen to inflict maximum political and economic damage to the Russian Federation. The attack took place just hours before President Dmitry Medvedev was due to give a keynote speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. It was specifically focused toward damaging the perception of the Russian Federation being a safe haven to do business, in the preparatory run up period to the country hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. Russian authorities have determined the attacker to be 20 year-old male from the restive North Caucasus region, where a long running campaign against Islamist extremists is [...]
