IT Threat Evolution in Q3 2011: From Malware in QR Codes to Targeted Attacks on Corporations

Kaspersky Lab announces the publication of its IT Threat Evolution report for the third quarter of 2011. The company’s analysts noted a continued growth in cyber-attacks against some of the world’s biggest corporations throughout the period. When it comes to attacking smartphones, there were clear signs that cybercriminals have made Android their platform of choice. Increasingly sophisticated operations by malicious programs were also noted in Q3 along with some tried-and-tested methods: innocuous QR codes are now being used to conceal malware and computers are facing threats even before their operating systems start as cybercriminals revisit BIOS infection methods.

Festive gift buying goes mobile in 2011

The power and portability of smartphones and tablets will save time and money for many people this holiday season. Over two times more shoppers plan to purchase gifts and 50 per cent more plan to book travel using their mobile devices this year, according to new research from Webroot, a leader in delivering Internet security as a service. But convenience may come at a cost for those who skip certain measures to secure their devices and personal data.

In a survey of 1,215 mobile device users, Webroot assessed people’s preferences for using mobile devices versus traditional means for researching and buying Christmas gifts, and for planning and booking trips. In addition, Webroot explored how people secure themselves on their mobile devices.

Border insecurity prompts serious questions ahead of 2012 Olympic Games

Britain’s border security has been called into question less than a year before the country plays host to the 2012 Olympic Games.

At issue is a government minister authorised pilot scheme to relax controls for certain passport holders. This authorised scheme envisioned perceived low risk individuals being allowed unfettered entry to the country. All others would be subjected to the full gamut of checks.

The scheme has allegedly been applied to all passport holders, irrespective of their origin.
